They Said

They said, “run” so I ran as fast as I could
They said, “slow” but you never wait for me.
As you race to nowhere just to say that you were there.
If you hold my hand it’s a sign you just might care.

They said, hide” so I hid as far as I could
They said, “seek” but they never looked for me.
Still I feel the darkness though the light still shines on me.
If you aim the flashlight there’s a chance you just might see.

They said, “try” so I worked as hard as I could.
They said, “give” but you take it all away.
If you feel indifferent to the need to have me near
You will find it easy to be anywhere than here.

There’s a part of me who knows exactly who I am.
There’s a part of me who believes in the love and the light I am.
But it’s the other half that wishes you knew that too.

They said, “faith” so I believed as hard as I could.
They said, hope” but you’ve given up on me.
In every memory is the life that you let die.
To believe you’re broken has become your battle cry.
